It is great to hear from all of you and to see how the pups are doing and what wonderful homes they are going to.  It keeps us inspired to raise the absolute best setters that we can.  We also wish to thank each and every one of you for keeping in contact and for the wonderful/fun gifts and cards that you send our way.  The drawings from the kids are precious.  We love them!!

Hi Kerry,

A shot of the Pup Katie (Powerball/Meg) at 9 1/2 months pointing grouse.  She is hunting up a storm and is just now starting to hold birds well.

Hey Kerry
My puppy has been great. I have him retrieving toys and I may be wrong but he is pretty much house-broke. He stays in his Kennel box at night and the last couple nights he has not made a sound.
Thanks,  E M....ND

Dear Marian & Kerry,

I thought I would send you the photo we used on our Christmas cards this year.  We are having a wonderful time with the puppies!    We named the male Duce and the female Storm.  Tom took them both out this past weekend to our ranch in Pollock South Dakota.  Storm ended up pointing on two hens!  Duce had more fun with the corn cobs and deer droppings. His turn will come!  Take Care and stop in when your in Bismarck next time.  J.G.  ....................  North Dakota

Luca pointed her first wild pheasant. She loves to hunt!  She's a great dog...wonderful in the field (only 11 months old) and a sweetheart at home.  Thanks for breeding such fine dogs.  P.B. .......  Minnesota

Hello Kerry and Marian, I wanted to bring you up to date on a little chestnut colored pup I got from you two years ago this past January.  "Chester" is out of Blackie and Zee, and when he came off the plane, he looked awfully small and lost.  He adapted very quickly, however, to his new surroundings and began developing into a strapping youngster. I never got to work him with live birds his first summer, though he took a real interest in the ducks and geese in the pond behind the house and in the variety of songbirds around all summer.  He absolutely loved water and never tired of fetching anything and everything I threw in the pond. His first hunting season (pheasants) did not start out with a bang.
He showed some interest in them, but even more interest in the geese and songbirds we encountered which, in hindsight, was probably to be expected.  I began to see the "light going on" over the next few trips, and by the fourth time out, Chester knew just what we were after and finished the season as well as could be expected for a young dog on wild, late-season pheasants. This past season, I believe he started out better than he left off the previous year.  He began handling  running birds right away and made some unbelievably long points on birds that I know had not run to where they were located. He's very stylish and athletic, and can really cover ground in grassy cover, though he always cares where I am and will not fail to make eye contact every 30 seconds or so.  Needless to say, this was Chester's breakout year, and I'd put him up against any other setter I've ever been around in the pheasant fields (that's quite a few).  I'm enclosing a picture of him on our last day of hunting in 2003 in Iowa.  This day he pointed about 45 hens, six roosters and four turkeys!  All his points look like this one with no training on my part.  In about three years, I'll be looking for another pup to start as a replacement for my older female.  I hope Blackie is still making puppies, and if so, I'll be back.  Feel free to use me as a reference for folks in and around the Twin Cities considering one of your pups.  Have a great 2004!  Stan S  MN

Just a few pictures and a note to tell you about Frankie (Blacksmith's last litter he sired with Goober 11/24/04).  She has turned out to be a excellent hunter, she went from pointing butterflies to pheasants.  Her first weekend out she pointed, honored and retrieved.  Each weekend she has progressively gotten better.  We joked she was our B team player as we have Yetta (Blacksmith/Blue Panzer) who is 4 this year.  I wondered if it was possible for any dog to fill Yetta's shoes as it was a pretty big job, but Frankie is just amazing.  We are totally happy with our A team…….and looking forward to some day adding a third player a few years down the road.

Kerry and Marian,

Just wanted to send along a progress report on Jack (Ike and Fuzzy Bee). I guess the first thing to say is that he's an absolute sweetheart........He is becoming quite a bird dog. He's extremely staunch on point, and he's steady to wing, not shot. He has to be one of the most natural retrievers I've ever seen in a setter. He delights in bringing the bird back and delivers to hand already. And I couldn't say more about his nose. Over the weekend, he made a point at better than forty yards, and even though the bird was wandering around in front of him (preserve birds, but this late in the season there's not much choice) he held steady. He's really opened up his range and is moving pretty big, and better yet, he's always under control. He's whistle trained to whoa on one blast, turn on two and come on four, and other than the first two or three minutes out of the crate (he is still a pup) he always listens and obeys. I have some good photos of him that I'll send along sometime. I just wanted to let you know that I could hardly be more pleased. He's a great hunting partner and a wonderful bird dog.  Thanks, Tom

Greetings folks,  Just wanted to give you an update on the Amazing Havelock Rosebud, AKA: "Rosie the Rocket", She is now three years old and entering her prime years for sure as an amazing bird dog.  She has really come into her own and simply rules the field! I know you get lots of letters from folks who talk about their new pups, and I sent you one to when the little Rocket was only 10 months old and already a superstar.  She has been featured in some newspaper stories already and the word is spreading about Havelock setters around the country. It was pure pleasure taking her out with the guys from the North American Hunter Magazine and and saying, this little dog is a machine, she never breaks, never flags, honors points and retrieves to hand. She performed flawlessly for eight straight hours, they were impressed for sure!. She even marked one grouse I shot and made a 300 yard retrieve with twenty hunters watching... Proud moment for me and she has yet to let me down.  What an animal, the guys keep telling me I should field trial her, but that is just not my thing, but deep down I would like of like to see just how good she really is against the best in the country. Rosie has been hunting with over 50 dogs in the last three years and she easily holds her own.  Proud owner of a hard working, and lovable Havelock Setter, Tom Z, Minneapolis  P.S. I hope to breed her in a year or so, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know....... I have not sent you any photos recently of Rosie the rocket.. So I am attaching this new one for you to review.  This was taken last weekend at a game farm.  We put out six birds and she found 9... At three years of age she is a superstar for sure, I can't even image what she will be like when she is in her prime. On this day, she was 100% perfect.  Never made a mistake or missed a retrieve. You should feel very proud of the dogs you breed.  My wife and I cannot thank you enough.  T.Z.  ............  Minnesota

Hello Folks   Just sending a little info about the male pup I got from you out of Meg and Powerball   This Saturday the 13 of Nov was a great day for us. We had pick # 1, He was #5 on your pictures. This was Bo's (short for bodacious) first trip in the field. I knew he would be good from his yard work but let me tell you about Bodacious and I do mean Bodacious I have never seen a more intense dog in my life. We took him to a hunting preserve we belong to. Cherry Bend in Wilmington Ohio. There were probably 100-125 hunters there and by the end of the day I was offered 2500.00 dollars from one man and six or seven guys wanting to breed to him.  And they had some fine females. We had one guy bring his buddies over just to watch this eight month old pup work. He has a twelve o'clock tail, staunch as a tree and will not flush on his own he just holds. He out worked my buddies five year old dog that has had hundreds of birds shot over her. Our first bird was a quail and by the time the bird hit the ground he had it and right back to my hand  he marked the bird great. By the end of the day we shot six quail and ten pheasant  and he retrieved 3 of the quail and seven of the pheasant What a great day it was  Again thank you for this great pup.   B.L.   ...........   Ohio

Kerry,
I hope all is well out there. I had a great hunting season. Thanks for breeding such fine bird dogs. I made great strides with my latest addition from your kennel. A female out of Blackie and ruby. She is around 10 months now and turning out to be a fine dog. I am sending you a updated picture of my older female, meagan, out of Blackie and cupid. This was taken at a local preserve here in new jersey on the last day of the hunting season.Again, hope all is well, and thank you for all of the great hours spent afield.

Hello All,
Here is a few pictures of us in Canaan Valley November 11th 2003.  Rodger, Rusty, Joey, and Jeannie (taking the picture).  We had a great day.  Joey got his first American woodcock.

 Hope all is well....Rusty

Hi,

We hunted Duke (out of Blacksmith) here in Minnesota and in South Dakota this last season and he was phenomenal right out of the box! Duke was just 10 months in October and is on his way to being a truly great hunting companion. I have attached a photo of Duke and the boys. Its hard to believe we hunted without shirts in October and last night it was 30 below zero..... Keep up the great work.

John MN

I thought I'd share a couple pictures of Yetta.  She is a two year old daughter of Panzer & Blacksmith.  She is an awesome dog to hunt behind.  Points the birds, gets them up when asked & has just started to retrieve.  I don't think it would be possible for my mom to be much happier with her girl. S.E.

*Note that the pheasant is still alive on this retrieve.

Just wanted to let you know that we picked up our new puppy yesterday at the Indianapolis airport.  He is a great puppy!   He didn't sleep much last night, but is making up for that today.  He acts like he has lived here forever.  We haven't named him yet but are working on that.  He went to preschool this morning with Leah (our four year old daughter) for Show and Tell and to the bank where Charlie works so everyone there could see him.  He will be staying in the house for a few days until we get his kennel ready.  Thank you so much for the puppy!

Hi Kerry & Marian,

I swear sometimes it is hard to be humble.  This training session took all of 30 seconds. What a pup !

Jimmy T

Marian,  Thanks for getting me the number, I wasn't worried about it. He fit himself right in the house here like he'd been in before and we laughed our selves silly when he jumped on the chair and then climbed on the table to help himself. I don't think we've ever seen a pup that young who could pull something like that off, it was one of those things you had to see LOL. He seems to have attached himself to one of my males who's about Blackie's size named Fargo, he's sleeping curled up next to Fargo as I write this. We still haven't thought of a name for him yet, we're trying to come up with something that fits him. We've seen pups from a number of breeders and I have to tell you that he's one of the best socialized pups we've ever had around, he takes everything in stride and is quite bold for his age. Thanks again, Randy

Kerry,

Here a few pics to enjoy.  "Blue"

Thanks...Mitch

Kerry,

"Boss" is about 9 years old now, and is just beginning to slow.

I shot about 30 wild birds over him last year, primarily pheasant and forest grouse. B. D. - MT

112103 - Marion,

This is Ivy, You called her Chessie when we stopped at your place on our way back to Bis. from Rapid City.  This is her third year hunting, and I can't believe there is another dog out there that hunts harder and finds more crippled birds than Ivy. She is OUTSTANDING.  Every time I go out I could write a short story on her achievements.  You raise some awesome dogs but I'm afraid you broke the mold when you sold Ivy to us........J.V.  ND

Have a 6 yr old of Blacksmith's and looking for another. Maybe out of Powerball. How do I speak with you on this? I am the Vice-President of the ********** Gundog Association and we have 5 of your dogs. Each one a winner in every way.

Dear Kerry & Marian,

Rock (aka Patch) is an awesome bird dog! He is 2 1/2 years old now and I lost count the number of Chukar and Hun coveys he has pointed. Thanks for such a great dog.
Sincerely,  C & T Hadley
PS We have never owned a bird dog as affectionate as this one. Still sleeps (on ) the foot of the bed.

Kerry, thank-you for our wonderful setter pup! Jazz has been pointing woodcock and grouse this fall (retrieving everything in sight) along with wild pheasants and many released birds on the preserve. Her personality is splendid; she sleeps with my nine year old little girl every night. At Hunters Creek, I guided a hunt for an editor of Field & Stream magazine who is a regular client. He said, after hunting with Jazz, that he would like to use her on a cover in the future! We can only hope. Everybody that I know that knows dogs is thoroughly impressed with her. I have had many "pros" asking to breed to her. However, I just tell them to go to the source- Havelock Kennels- we can not improve on the original!  Best regards, Tracey L.- No pic yet....

Kerry,  "Blackie" is really growing.

Rex and I just love our Havelock dogs, more pictures later.  Rodger L.

Schorches,
Well, "Seamus"' ('99 litter from Blackie and Nellie) second season has wrapped up, and I could not be  happier.  He consistently outperforms any dog with which he hunts, and has also been a perfect dog in the house and neighborhood.  I see that you had another litter from his sire and dam sold out...lucky owners!  I plan to get another pup in a few years, and you can be sure to hear from me.  Thank you for doing such a terrific job with your breeding program.  If anyone ever asks you for a reference, please feel free to use my name. Have a wonderful holiday!  --Steve B

Hi Kerry:

I hope this finds you and your family well, and that you have had a great summer. Fall is in the air here in New Mexico, especially in the high country, and I can hardly wait for the cool weather.   We've had a busy summer working at the ranch and having a lot of fun with "Abby". I started some basic training with her pretty early, but she has seemed to be ready, willing and able. She has done well with the whistle command drill and now is very good at responding. I also have been working her on planted pen raised birds for about 4 weeks now. I think she's getting the hang of it. She has beautiful style and is rock solid on point ... at least most of the time !!!  Last weekend she went with us on our annual hunt for blue grouse up in the Pecos wilderness area north of Santa Fe. We hunt up at elevations from 10,000 to 11,400 feet. This year looks like a great one for the grouse, we found many more birds than in the last three years. Abby did extremely well, she actually located 3 coveys out of the six we found. Three out of the four of us got our 3 bird limit. She worked really well for her first real hunt. I was proud of her efforts ... she really made the Brittney owner wonder about how good these  English Setters are! I'm attaching a couple of pictures, she is turning in to such a beautiful girl! Thank you again for sending her my way!!!   I'll try to stay in touch and keep you posted as she progresses. Have a great fall and enjoy the upcoming seasons.   Sincerely ......Bob - NM

Dear Mrs. Schorsch,  During June of 1999, I purchased a pup from you based on your website advertising, conversations with Mr. Schorsch and some word of mouth. In my experience rarely does the final product match the hype or the buildup.  Jack as I call him, is out of Blacksmith and Nellie. The dog has been trialed in Alberta and Saskatchewan and hopefully will contest the Chicken Championship in Mortlach this year baring a move of venue to Solon Springs. During Jack's derby career, I ran him in 7 or 8 events placing him 5 times. The dog has 2 open derby placements and 3 shooting dog derby placements. The biggest difference between Jack and a true prairie all age is that Jack will turn at distance with you and if separated will hunt you up in a timely fashion. The interesting thing about the dog is that I train mostly on foot or off my mtn. bike. The adage of setters not being to run in the heat has certainly been dispelled by Jack. I won't bore you with any more details, but suffice to say, the dog is a keeper. Most importantly, Jack is the best kids dog I've owned.  Once again, its a rare privilege to have a dog like this and to find a situation where people are as good as their word!  Thanks again,  John A - Edmonton, Canada

Hello Marian and Kerry,

I have attached a picture of "Mutt" .  I look forward to the field trial season to see how he competes.  He sure is a fine hunting dog. Thanks, Gary W.

All,
I finally got a decent picture of Cailean.  He has now peaked out at 55 lbs. and looks very much like his sire, Ch. Havelock Powerball.

Kerry,  Feel free to use the photo on your website along with the comments I sent a while back.  Alan

Kerry & Marian,  I want to thank you for allowing us to purchase such a great puppy from you! Jim & I visited your farm on 10-5-06 & picked out a puppy from Reba/Clippership that was Whelped 7-24-06.  I must say that I never expected to bring home a puppy that would be like this!  I never even considered the thought that I would get a puppy that was conditioned to be House Trained! From day one when we took him outside he did his duty on command & never had a "potty accident" in the house. Beyond that, what a natural hunt dog  he is!!! Once we were able to overcome the separation anxiety & had a full night of sleep, he has been smelling & on point with an eagerness I have never encountered before. He is so focused & eager to please, that the usual puppy manner training have been a breeze.. He can sit & "Wait for it" for a full 60 seconds after only two weeks.  Most days he is training me more than I am training him.. As I told you, I am not the one who wanted a dog & am not the one who will hunt with the dog.. but I am the one that is home with him most of the time. (I am a stay at home mom with no children "home"  during the day)  Every time that I have become aggravated with him for not coming to me on command & going further than he should, it is because he has picked up a scent & is eager to share it. I am starting to feel like the trainee..  I have been around trained dogs  but have never experienced them in the field & feel like I am getting a crash course in such education.  When we go out the country to burn off energy, his dead stop point has caused me a greater scare from the running prey when I look for his "point" & something fly's or runs than him. Today he made me feel very foolish.. Since day two of bringing him home he has focused on a certain area of my garden... I tried to keep him away as it was in the large Rhubarb patch & I though it might be poisons.. He let me know what a "Stupid Human" I was by digging up a Large hibernating Toad today. When I first contacted you I also expressed my concern about a Bird Dog's reaction to my companion parrots. I am happy to report that he has not only left them alone, but has shown very little interest in them at all. I assume it is because they are part of the natural smell of our home. I am actually more concerned about keeping the puppy safe from my African Grey than I worry that the puppy will harm the bird. He shows major interest in the bird feeders outside of the house & yet stays as far away as he can from our companion birds..Or  Perhaps because they "talk" & my Parrot was "Scolding him in my voice" within 2 days. Either way, I am certain that we can work it out with little problem.  Sidney ( my African Grey Parrot) also perfected the puppy separation Whelp cry after only one night much to my dismay..... You have really great dogs & I will not hesitate to recommend you to anyone that is interested! I am starting to wish that I could have more than 1... This is not just a great Hunt Dog but an amazing Family dog as well.
