When we started concentrating on breeding the Smith Setters in 1986, our goal was to first produce an outstanding Tomoka line, and then cross that line of dogs with The Performer line. Blackie's mother, Havelock Lady Tomoka, is that outstanding Tomoka
female, and Blackie's father, Ch. Destinare is a direct son of Ch. The Performer.
Destinare:
Blackie's father, Ch. Destinare, made field trial history in the 1994 field trial season by winning three consecutive major championships, an unprecedented feat. Those three championships (open to all breeds of point dogs) were: the Egyptian Open Shooting Dog Championship (114 entries), The Illinois Open Shooting Dog Championship (140 entries - the largest in field trial history), and the Michigan Open Shooting Dog Championship (79 entries). In that winning season, Ch. Destinare accumulated the largest number of points since the Top Shooting Dog was initiated - 4,475 points. As a point of comparison, the second place dog, an English Pointer, Sumter's Hacienda Bull, scored 1550 points.
Ch. Tomoka, and Ch. The Performer are two of the last three English Setters to make it into the Field Trial Hall of Fame. Ch. Tomoka was inducted in 1985. Ch. The Performer was inducted in 1995. We believe we have achieved the great nose and bird finding ability of Ch. Tomoka, and the high style and class of Ch. The Performer in this dog Havelock Blacksmith. Because of all the field trial records that Ch. Destinare has broken, we feel that Ch. Destinare has a good chance to make it into the Field Trial Hall of Fame. Havelock Blacksmith is the only dog we know of in the world that so successfully blends the lines of the last two Hall of Fame setters (Ch. Tomoka and Ch. The Performer) with a very likely future English Setter inductee, Ch. Destinare.
Ch. Tomoka, Ch. The Performer, and Ch. Destinare are all from the kennel of Elwin and Inez Smith and were handled and trained by Harold Ray.
In September of 1996, Harold Ray handled Blackie to a first place derby finish at the Dakota Saskatchewan Shooting Dog Championship against field trial dogs from all over the United States. Blackie won this trial at the age of 14 months, just two months after being leashed for the first time. We co-owned Blacksmith with Inez Smith during the fall 1996 through spring 1998 field trial seasons. During that time, Mrs. Smith's handler, Harold Ray, handled Blackie to four thrilling field trial placements. Marian and I are very grateful to both of them for giving Blackie a chance to prove himself.
In October of 1996, at the National Shooting Dog Futurity, contested in Baldwinsville, NY on pheasant, The American Field magazine reported that Blackie "looked like two million dollars on point." In January of 1997, Blackie placed third at the Georgia Shooting Dog Championship Derby Classic and fourth at the United States Quail Futurity in North Carolina (77 entries). In February 1997, Havelock Blacksmith won the 1997 North Carolina Open Shooting Dog Championship over a very strong field of 107 entries! In so doing, at the age of 19 months, it is believed that he became the youngest dog of any breed in United States field trial history to win an open shooting dog championship. In tandem with his first place victory at the Dakota Saskatchewan Shooting Dog Derby trial, Blackie claimed the rare distinction of having won the first derby age trial he entered, and also the first Championship he ever entered.
Blackie may be that rare dog that comes along once in a thousand years. His conformation is perfect; strong straight legs with a deep girth for great lung capacity. He has a beautiful head, with even mask and square nose. He is one of those rare natural dogs that really break themselves. Their desire to point is so strong that you can just take them out and start shooting birds over them. Blackie has all the bird sense of your good old hunting dog, but he has the class and ability to compete and win against the best field trial dogs in the United States. He is truly a dog who can raise the bar and take English Setters to a new, higher level of performance.
Harold Ray and Inez Smith did a super job with Blackie. Blackie is siring beautiful pups that really like to point and back with style.
