We have been raising
English setters since 1980. We are fortunate to live in southwestern
North Dakota, where upland game birds thrive. In a good day of dog
training or hunting, we will see several hundred to several thousand wild
pheasants. Many of the top bird dog trainers in North America come
to our part of the state to train their bird dogs.
Our goal has always been to improve the
breed. My wife Marian and I have been fortunate to meet a lot of
great bird dog people in the last 28 years. These knowledgeable men
and women have helped us immeasurably as we
continue.
I really like to hunt a lot. I live right in the
middle of the best wild pheasant hunting in North America and I get to
spend lots of time afield. Sometimes when I am out, it's just me, my
friends and 10,000 pheasants. It is great and I love it. Marian and I like
dogs that like to point a lot, point early and back naturally with style.

We like to compete with
our dogs and for the most part, we have been very successful at it over
the last 20+ years. When you buy a puppy from us, you will know that
we've are continually competing and testing our dogs against the best
pointing dogs of all breeds around the country. We've been fortunate
to win the North Dakota Pheasant Championship several times in the last
fifteen years or so, with our dogs, Havelock
Powerball, Havelock Ike
and Havelock Doc. Havelock
Citation and Havelock
Blackjack are carrying the banner for us around the country right now.
For the most part, our customers have very good luck
with our dogs. Around 98 percent of our dogs go hunters and
falconers. They make great pets and hunting companions: http://www.esetter.com/ho1.htm.
If your intent is to compete with our dogs, you will be glad to know that
our customers do well in that arena also: http://www.esetter.com/winnerscircle.htm
.
Our most well known dog was
probably Havelock Blacksmith.
"Blackie" was used for several years by Purina in their
"Chosen by Champions" ads.
We live on a nice
farm/ranch of over 3,000 acres along the Cannonball River. Ours is a
5th generation farm and this is where I grew up and have lived for over 50
years. This is the "Best of the Best" when it comes to
pheasant habitat. In all of my hunting and field trial travels
around the country, I have never come across a place that is better suited
to training and evaluating young bird dogs.

Our kennel set up
has grown over the years. Our kennel complex has 9 large grass,
fenced exercise areas from about one half acre, up to the largest pen of
about 20 acres. The kennel complex is large enough to have the dogs
hunting, finding and pointing wild pheasants or sharptail grouse inside
their pens. Several of the photos you see on our website were
taken while the dogs were on point on wild birds in their exercise
areas. All of our dogs have plenty of room to run and
roam.
Our puppy pens are indoors, with a pet door
leading outside to a larger area, up to about a half acre in size.
Lots of customers tell us that the puppies we send them are very easy to
house train. Our puppies learn that they don't have to go to
bathroom where they live. Consequently, they will be used to going to the
bathroom outside when you get a puppy from us. Give them the chance
to go outside, and they will. Our puppies get to romp and play with
plenty of room. We are out with the puppies every day and the
puppies are well socialized.
Our smallest
kennel runs are our breeding runs where we bring the female dogs for about
three weeks when they come in season. These kennels are 56 feet long
and 8 feet wide. Plenty of room for a dog to exercise. The
mother dogs are with the puppies in their puppy areas for about six
weeks. After the puppies are weaned, it's back out to the big
exercise areas for Mom. Our dogs are healthy, content, well
exercised and happy.
When we keep a pup
to evaluate for our breeding program, they usually get to run loose on the
farm until they are about a year old. During this year, we get to
see the pups hunt and point lots of wild birds. They learn to walk
with us and work to the front. During these daily walks, we see
which of the pups point early, back naturally and are smart enough to hunt
a large area, but still stay with us. We find out which dogs are
smart enough find us again when they get lost. For our breeding
purposes we only keep the best dogs that show lots of natural
ability.
We usually have
pups available throughout the year and will usually be able to provide you
with a puppy at the time that it will work best for you.
We want to thank you for visiting our website.
Marian tries to keep it pretty current and let you know what is going with
our dogs. We hope that you take the time to check all the pages and
get a feel for what we are doing out here on the prairie. Let us
know if we can help you, and we'll try to send you the kind of pup that
will work best for you.
Sincerely,
Kerry and Marian
